Understanding Relapse Prevention

Relapse is not an event; it is a progressive process that begins long before a person picks up a substance. At the Recovery Skills Center, we define Relapse Prevention as a systematic method of identifying and managing the “warning signs” that lead back to active addiction.

Our goal is to move beyond the “white knuckling” sobriety. We provide education necessary to recognize internal dysfunction-such as emotional triggers, stress, and memory issues- and interrupt the cycle before the crisis occurs.

The Recovery Skills Center was founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to practical, high quality recovery tools. We specialize in helping individuals who have achieved abstinence but find themselves “stuck” in the recovery process. Our goal is to help clients restore their lives and find a sustainable path forward.

Driven by passion, grounded by values. We're a team of passionate thinkers and doers, dedicated to building with purpose and clarity. Collaboration and curiosity drive everything we do.

Our Services

1. Stabilization and Education

The first step is moving out of the "fog" of early withdrawal. Services focus on explaining Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). This is the physiological "malfunction" of the brain that causes mood swings, memory problems, and sleep disturbances for months after quitting.

We offer a 10 week course to educate you on causes of relapse, identifying warning signs and management strategies.

2. Identifying Relapse Warning Signs

Services involve using the workbook to "map" a client’s history against these signs, such as:

  • Defensiveness: High levels of anxiety leading to "I'm fine" responses.

  • Stagnation: Feeling stuck in a routine or losing interest in recovery tools.

  • Tunnel Vision: Only seeing one way out of a stressful situation.

3. Management Strategies (The "Action" Phase)
